Ogata Kōrin is renowned for the extraordinary beauty and originality of his compositions. In Peacock and Hollyhock Screen, a male peacock spreads its magnificent feathers before a female against a luminous golden background.

The sweeping movement created by the peacock’s outstretched feathers, together with the carefully arranged plum trees and rocks, demonstrates Kōrin’s distinctive mastery of composition and his meticulous attention to detail.

This depiction of the peacock holds a particularly special place in Takashi Murakami’s artistic memory. During his university years, Murakami encountered the work while visiting Kyoto with a group studying ancient Japanese art. It was there that he happened to hear Matazō Kayama, the Japanese painter who would later become his mentor, remark simply, “Kōrin is skilled.”

That single comment prompted Murakami to return to the peacock painting again and again, studying its composition and expressive power.

Approximately forty years after that formative experience, Murakami revisited Kōrin’s composition in his own work. Inheriting the essential structure of the original, he depicts a peacock with its feathers dramatically spread, rendered through the brilliance of gold leaf and vibrant rainbow colours.
